Michigan Fall Landscaping Guide: Prepare & Plant for spring

Prepare your lawn and landscape for spring success!

  1. Topdressing your lawn- fall is the right time for topdressing your lawn in Michigan with compost, peat or pell cover. Topdressing your lawn adds new organic matter and can improve soil structure for a healthier lawns.  Aeration prior can aid the process.
  2. Sod & Grass Seed- lower temperatures and high soil moisture can make fall a great time for lawn improvement projects. September is a good month to install grass seed to ensure it germinates before winter.
  3. Adding Mulch around existing plants- A fresh layer of mulch in late fall will add an extra layer of insulation to your plants before winter. Just remember not to pile mulch around the base of trees or plants.

Is fall a good time to plant?

Yes! Lower fall temperature with cool air and warm soil is ideal time for planting trees, shrubs and perennials.  Planting in September gives your new plants time to establish roots before winter.

Shade trees thrive in fall planting in Michigan, which allows them to focus on root establishment vs leaf production. Giving them time to prepare for winter and be well suited for spring growth.
